Apple

Lead Designer :: 1.5 years and counting

My Work at Apple

Image description
As Lead Designer for the purchase and post-purchase areas of the multi-billion dollar Apple Online Store, I am responsible for all web design projects related to cart, checkout, customer accounts, order history, Store emails, and more. The team I lead prides itself on solving some of the most complex design problems faced by the Online Store. I was the lead designer for all of the projects below.

Account & Orders

A complete redesign of the Apple Online Store's account and order tracking environment

Challenges

  1. Design a world-class Account & Order Management environment for Apple customers.
  2. Create an entirely new site architecture, informational design, and visual style guide.
  3. Create a simple, yet robust informational design that reduces Customer Service call volume and increases customer satisfaction.

Solutions

  1. Simplified information complexity by creating a one-page Order design that displays only key information and actions in the initial view. Orders easily expand with one click to display more detailed order information.
  2. Created a two-state Account management page where customers can easily scan and modify their account information.

Online Returns & Cancellations

A complete redesign of the Apple Online Store's Return & Cancellation system

Challenges

  1. Make returning an Apple product or cancelling an order as easy as possible.
  2. Support a variety of world-wide requirements with one flexible design.
  3. Create confidence for customers around next steps.

Solutions

  1. Designed a simple 2-step process for all returns and cancellations.
  2. Created clarity around exactly why certain items are not eligible for return or cancellation.
  3. Clearly communicate success of the transaction and next steps when appropriate.

Express Checkout

A tactical revamp of an Apple Online Store feature favored by Steve Jobs

Challenges

  1. Create an interaction model that allows Apple to stop paying Amazon royalties for the term "1-Click".
  2. Create a design that allows customers to make a purchase with minimal effort and have a high level of confidence in the transaction.

Solutions

  1. Created a low profile, iTunes-like 2-click purchase experience.
  2. Provided clarity on what is being purchased, total cost, where it is shipping, and when it will arrive.

TiVo

Senior Designer :: 4.5 years

My Work at TiVo

Image description

As the lead designer for both the web and mobile platforms for TiVo, I led the design efforts for a wide variety of projects. During my time at TiVo, I became an integral part of the decision-making product teams of which I was a part. As a result, I was one of only two designers promoted to Senior Designer on a design team of 15 people.

TiVo.com - Products

Architected and designed from scratch the new and critically important Products section of tivo.com

Challenges

  1. Create a new section taxonomy within the existing tivo.com web site.
  2. Create information design that explains a fairly complex technical product in an easily digestible and understandable way.
  3. Represent all of the business needs of TiVo's core products.

Solutions

  1. Created a simple section navigational structure that allows customers to quickly find both high level and detailed product information.
  2. Created a product page template that is still in use today (4 years later) which highlights the physical beauty of the product and provides answers to key customer questions.

TiVo.com - Online DVR Management Environment

Created a whole new interaction model for finding new shows and setting up online recordings

Challenges

  1. Provide a much-needed visual and interactive redesign of tivo.com's DVR management and content discovery web application.
  2. Help TiVo customers accomplish tasks that at the time, few consumers had a mental model for: managing their DVR content and setting up recordings via a web interface.
  3. Create new ways to help TiVo customers find interesting content.

Solutions

  1. Designed an entirely new online DVR management system including TiVo's first online interactive Season Pass manager, My Shows list, and To-Do List.
  2. Invented the "1-Click" recording feature that allows customers to instantly set up recordings with pre-configured settings.
  3. Designed and created the logic behind a new daily content recommendation module.

TiVo.com - Shop

Completely redesigned the tivo.com shopping and purchase experience

Challenges

  1. Completely re-design the TiVo.com purchase experience to address significant issues including:
  • A high abandonment rate due in part to missing or confusing product information.
  • Customers purchasing without knowing they would need to pay for monthly service.
  • Customers not realizing they owned their TiVo DVR - they thought it was a rental.

Solutions

  1. Created an easy to understand "1-2-3" purchase flow that made it clear that purchasing TiVo meant buying a box + service.
  2. Designed a world-class checkout experience that has lasted for more than 5 years.
  3. Provided clarity on key product information throughout the purchase flow.

TiVo Mobile & Other Projects

My other projects at TiVo included a full-scale redesign of tivo.com, TiVo Mobile, and the experimental TiVo Labs

Projects

  1. Designed TiVo's first mobile application. The light-weight application was considered a significant success for TiVo.
  2. Was the lead designer for a multi-year, full-fledged redesign of tivo.com. This project taught me many valuable lessons.
  3. Was a founding member and part of the leadership team for TiVo Labs; a project to foster inventiveness and creativity while envisioning future TiVo technology.

NASA Ames Research Center

Web Designer :: 2.5 years

My Work at NASA Ames Research Center

Image description
I worked as an all-purpose web designer and developer for the Color Usage Research Lab at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA. For the lab, I created two key web sites, performed user analysis for air traffic control software, and consulted on the UI of a java-based color selection tool. Perhaps my most valuable experience at the Lab was having the opportunity to learn about the use of color in complex information displays from one of the field's most prominent research scientists, Dr. Larry Arrend.

NASA Color Usage Research Lab Web Sites

Challenges

  1. Create a mini website that represents the CURL organization and lives within an official NASA web site.
  2. Create a research web site for use by design professionals that made it easy to find information and solve specific complex design problems.

Solutions

  1. I created the Color Usage Research Lab mini-site to represent the CURL team and its work.
  2. Developed and partly designed the "Using Color In Information Display Graphics" web site for Dr. Larry Arrend.
